This past weekend, Rebecca and I went camping with the Girl Scout troop. It definitely was an experience in itself. Rebecca had never been camping, and I've kind of gone camping before, but had the availability of showers if needed.
We left on Friday night and headed to the campgrounds. Some of the troop was already there, so we waited on others to arrive. We ate beforehand, but after all the beds were made for sleeping and things were set up for the next day, we all had snacks (root beer floats and brownies).
I got a total of about five MINUTES of sleep on Friday night. Between the unawareness of our surroundings, girls getting up to use the bathroom (in the cabin for use only at night), and a few meltdowns by some, sleep was just not in the cards for me (and according to Rebecca, not for her either).
On Saturday, I was part of the breakfast making crew. The pancakes that we attempted to make turned out way to watery so that was a bust. We ended up having scrambled eggs, bacon, cereal, and fruit. After breakfast, the girls worked on some projects up until lunch time.
After lunch we all went for a hike ... a very SCARY hike. I am not one for heights, and there were quite a few areas where there were pretty big drop offs. The ground was extremely muddy and there were leaves everywhere, so it made it very slippery. One of the little ones even fell through the opening on a bridge. Thank goodness the fall wasn't too far, and she was fine (just a bit shaken up).
When we got back to camp, we all took about a 30-minute "chill out" break. Some even fell asleep. Dinner was served and then the girls had a few more projects to work on. We went outside when it got dark, sang some songs around the fire, and each had a smookie (smore/cookie).
After our little outside excursion, we headed inside for the girls to exchange Valentines and for their leader to hand out the badges/patches earned that weekend. Sleep on Saturday night was so much better.
Sunday morning we woke up and went on a "safer" hike, had breakfast, and then cleaned up the cabin so we could all get ready to head out and go home.
Rebecca had fun hanging out with her troop. She is lucky that a lot of the girls are in her first-grade class at school. Even though the sleeping wasn't the greatest, it was a good experience. I would definitely do it again ... and so would Rebecca.
